Weekend Travels

We spent this past weekend in Oklahoma with our families. Nikki's family had been down recently but we hadn't seen Grady, Crystal, Aiden since May and my Mom since April. We packed a lot into one weekend. We drove home Thursday, which wasn't too bad but hurt my back. I just can't take long car rides anymore. Friday, my mom and I went to see "Public Enemies." It wasn't bad, but it was high action or drama really either. The director, Michael Mann, did a lot of things to give a a particular "look." He used a lot of natural lighting and very few "sets" so it had a very documentary look to it. It seemed like some of the scenes were shot all in one take too but I wasn't really watching for that so I couldn't tell. I'd give it a "good rental but no reason to see it in the theater".

That evening, Grady and I played 40k. I think it was the worst game of 40k I have ever played. Not that it wasn't fun, I just had the worst luck ever. I failed every single leadership roll I had to make and had at least 3 units run off the board and my warboss unit missed with all his hits the first time he went to attack. I still almost manged to pull out a draw. If I was more familiar with the 5th edition rules and targeted Grady's troop transports right off it could have been a draw.

Saturday we had lunch with Nikki's family to celebrate her sister birthday and then that evening went and saw District 9. It was a really good Sci-Fi film, probably the best I've seen in a while. It was, however, violent and gory. Nikki liked the story quite a bit but was put off by the violence, so be warned if you go see it. Not for the squeamish or children.

Dragoncon is less than 3 weeks away now and folks are getting excited.

I finally got around to taking pictures of the game room remodel with everything complete so here ya go.

I'd like to welcome zmaxpex as a new reader. Hopefully reading about my life will hold as much interest to him/her/it as viagra and amateur porn. Hey if you can't make fun of your own spam commenters who can you make fun of?

I was in Albany New York most of last week for work. Flew up there on Tuesday and back on Thursday. American doesn't have flights there from DFW so I ended up flying United through Chicago on the way their and Continental through Cleveland on the way back. The Cleveland airport is very nice btw, very modern looking.

Nikki and I haven't done too much these past two weeks. Last weekend we both did a bike ride in Granbury,TX. It was supposed to be 38 miles but turned out to be around 43. We almost got caught in a rainstorm during the ride but it somehow missed us. That was nice since it made the ride a lot cooler than it would have been. I did a ride this weekend in Rockwall,TX. It was 58 miles and the wind and heat were brutal. I'm still preparing for the Lone Star ride in late September so I'm trying to do a ride every weekend that I can. Nikki opted to skip this ride, since her sister and family were coming in town again this weekend. Our Nephew, Tyler still enjoys chasing the cat and going "RAR." Incidentally our other Nephew, Aiden expressed a desire to "Go to Bubba and Nikki's house and chase the cat." I never realized cat chasing was so popular among 2-3 years olds. There's got to be a toy idea there somewhere.

Nikki's family came back to pick up the old table that we were using in the game room, which means the game room is now COMPLETE! I'll have to get some pictures of it up soon. We had planned on taking some yesterday and never really got around to it. I went and saw GI Joe instead. It was, I dunno, not bad. I mean it's not like it was high art to begin with. Christopher Eccleston was a great bad guy,he needs to be in more stuff.

We're still continuing down the road of parenthood but no news yet. Starting our third round at the Fertility clinic this month.

We're heading to Oklahoma this weekend to see the family. Grady and I will probably fit in some 40k as well.

Reading

I just finshed Codelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold which is the first book of the Vorkosigan Saga.
Very good book, but the Sci-Fi bits are really secondary to the story.

Right now I'm reading The Lost Fleet Series by John Hemry/Jack Campbell It's sorta Honor Harrington but not really, though Honor Harrington even goes downhill in the later novels.
