IE Blows

In case you didn't know or needed actual mathmatical proof. There were only 7 days in 2004 in which Internet Explorer was safe from some kind of security exploit or hack. This means 98% of the time in 2004 your somputer could have been compromised by known flaw in IE. Firefox was only unsafe for 56 days of 2004.

You can read the entire report here.

Or you could just take my word for it and Download Firefox.

Fuitadnet Sucks Again

Good thing I migrated the site away from fuitadnet and moved it here to 1 and 1. I guess, the server that was hosting my pages over at fuitadnet died and they had to restore a backup. That part is okay. If they had done it right I probably wouldn't even have noticed. Except they restored a backup FROM OCTOBER. If I hadn't moved the website here I would have lost everything since October. Everything has moved here now though. Even the ryanmoore.org name will change to this website in about a week.

Whew

Well after a full day of travel on Monday to get to PA and another full day yesterday to get back, I'm finally home. I don't mind travelling for work but it sure makes it easier when I can drive to the airport when I get done and catch a 2 hour flight rather than drive an hour to the airport to then fly six hours. Next trip up is Savannah,GA on Feb 5th, guess I won't be watching the SuperBowl.

In other News, Sisters of Mercy are playing here in Dallas at the Gypsy Tea Room on Feb 22nd. They are one of few bands that I really like that I've never seen. You can get tickets from thier website.

The best part, the name on the email was "Warlord Remus."

Free Holiday

As you may or may not know Monday is Martin Luther King Day. It's a Federal Holiday and most scools in this area are closed. Normally, My company doesn't give us this day off, though a lot of people take it as a vacation day. This year, it was decided that MLK day would be an official Holiday. I didn't realize this until today when I told my boss I'd have something to him by Monday and he pointed out that Monday was a Holiday. It seems a little soon. I just got January 2nd off as a Holiday and here 2 weeks later I get another one. So now I have Monday free, which is probably good, cause school just started again and I haven't had a chance to work on this weeks assignment yet.

Jury Duty

Well Jury Duty was a bust. When I arrived at the court house there was a huge line to get in through security. Everyone was standing in an orderly line and it was moving fairly quickly. It was freezing cold though. Some court employees tried to either organize the line or get it moving faster but all they did was succeed in turning the orderly line in a big mess. One of them mentioned that there was another entrance so I headed off around the building and found the rear entrance. There was still a line there but it was much shorter. I then proceeded to wait in the Jury room. They call you by number and mine was 1291. After they had called up through about 950, they said they had no more requests for juries and if no requests were made by lunch the rest of use could go home. No more juries were called so I got to leave a little after noon. My whole jury experience involved standing in the cold and then sitting around for 4 hours. The only thing that could have been better was if I had been called in on the very first jury. Somehow thier case got dismissed right after they were called up, so they all got to go home around 10:30.

CT Scan Results

I was just chatised by Halo for not announcing my results of my CT Scan so I guess I better let everyone know. I went to the Doctor last Friday and got the results of my latest CT Scan. There was no change from the last two scans. This means that the tumor is still gone and not growing. I only have to go see the Doctor for routine tests every 3 months instead of every 5 Weeks now. The End of April will be one year since I completed my treatment. After that the chances of the Cancer returning are slight. After 5 years there is almost no chance of it ever returning.

Jury Duty starts tomorrow so I'm sure I'll have some intresting stories from that.

Things Not To Do in an RPG

Phlome first discovered this great list of things not to do in an RPG and Ninsi sent it out again today. I record it here for posterity. To this list I would Add:

Dynamite is not a Melee Weapon.
You are not allowed to name your character after some goofball you knew in high school. (MONKETO!)

Oh and check THIS out! Sure it'd be cool for Monopoly and all but imagine playkng D&D with interactive maps! I would pay real serious cash for that.

Unpatched Windows Security Hole

UPDATE

YEEEK! The WMF viewer is what is used to generate thumbnails of pictures on websites and is used by the preview pane of outlook. This means you can get whacked with some spyware just byt visting a website or viewing an email through the preview page in outlook.

There is an unoffical patch to fix the problem but I personally wouldn't recommend installing an unofficial patch.

If you have an updated virus scanner on your pc such as Norton or McAffee it should detect a corrupt WMF being displayed and disallow it before it infects your pc.

If you are REALLY worried you can delete the dll that runs the WMF viewer (shimgvw.dll) though of course this will cause some images to not display and may mess up the Outlook preview pane. The only sure fix is a patch from Microsoft, which, they say, is in the works.

ORIGNAL POST
A new security hole has been found in the WMF (Windows Metafile) file format. This is the file format used by windows picture and fax veiwer. Currently, there is not a pacth for it. There are exploits and viruses cirruclating on the internet that will use this exploit to install keystroke loggers, spyware, and adware on your pc. The best way to defend against this exploit is to update your virus scanner and don't open any .WMF files you might recieve in an email. The only way you can become infected is by opening a .WMF file.

Reading

I just finshed Codelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold which is the first book of the Vorkosigan Saga.
Very good book, but the Sci-Fi bits are really secondary to the story.

Right now I'm reading The Lost Fleet Series by John Hemry/Jack Campbell It's sorta Honor Harrington but not really, though Honor Harrington even goes downhill in the later novels.
