DragonCon Minus Three

Well only three days to go now. Ninsi has posted here schedule as well. Of course, I'll be lucky if it make it to half the stuff I posted about yesterday. I think I made it to roughly 5 events last year 2 of which turned out to be lame and I left.

Did I mention I'll be dressing up as a Stonecutter? The whole crew will be actually. Big thanks to the Bareflix people for making the costumes!

Not quite Combat Ready

I flew up to Chicago on Wednesday, so I could be at a meeting at 8:30am on Thursday. The meeting was cancelled at 8am. Whoo.

Phlome posted about Serenity made out of Legos, which is pretty damn cool. However, how bout a real live mech, fully equipped with flamethrowers. Check out the videos ,while impressive, it's not quite ready to take on the Alien queen just yet.

One week till DragonCon!

How far?

Recently at the Security Convention DEFCON, some enterprising wi-fi gurus got an unamplified 802.11 network set up over a distance of 124.9 miles!

Oh and you know the new RFID chips everyone talks about using, espcially in credit cards? The credit Cards companies would like you to believe that they can only be picked up "a few inches away." The world record for communicating with a passive RFID device was set at 69 feet.

Ethics? Nah just have a killer Resume.

School has started again today in earnest, for me at least. I did my first weeks worth of assignments today. In addition to my normal class on Network Security I'm also taking the mandatory "Ethics" class. I'm supposed to attend 16 ethics lectures to get an A. Of course, since this is an online degree, this means I have to listen to 15 Ethics lectures on the website and then take a quiz over them. I'm excited beyond words. They don't even really seem like ethics lectures, most of them are about general business practices, like "How to write an effective Resume." The good thing is that the due date for the ethics lectures is "before I graduate" so I can basically do one a month and still get done on time.

Had a great time this weekend at a friends Bachelor party. A group of us headed to Shreveport and hang out at the Casinos. I ended up playing poker most of the time and was up quite a bit by the end of the night. Not as much as New Years when I won $600 on one slot machine pull, but close.

The New Channel-Zero is up and ready for viewing. The domain change should be effective in a day or so I'd guess and this page will be no more. Which is good cause hostdime has been getting worse and worse, half the time I can't bring up my control panel or webmail even though the main page loads just fine.

Weekends? I need more of em

Been busy this week, which is why no work is really getting done on the new Domain over at ryanmoore.org. It does have some less painful colors now, but it still needs some setup. My weekends are now set for about the next month. This weekend I'm headed to Shreveport to help a friend celebrate the end of his Bachelorhood. Then the next weekend is the wedding. Labor Day weekend is, of course, DragonCon, for which plans are falling in to place. Ninsi is already planning out her costume and Panel schedule. And then the ever elusive Vegas trip another friend has been planning is the next weekend. Not sur eIf I'll make that one though.

Dentist

I went to the Dentist today. The first time since before I started Chemo. For some reason, the don't want you to go to the Dentist while you are in treatment for cancer. Suposedly so you won't get an infection, but that seemed counter-intuitive to me. Since I hadn't been to the dentist in over a year and probably because of some residual chemo effects, I have 2 cavities. I don't think I've had one since I was a kid.

Khuul rented a place to live, but all his stuff won't be delivered till the 20th so they don't really get to move in till then.

I also have to get up at around 3 am to put some routes in a router and then test the network. I at least get to do it all from home. In the old days I might have just stayed up till 3am but I think I'll just go to bed and get up and do the work, then go back to bed.

Old Friends and New Site

One of my oldest friends, Khuul, and his Girlfriend moved here this weekend. I had already planned a small gathering for Saturday so they got to hang out and meet everyone. The new site ryanmoore.org is up, but there isn't much there yet, just a basic MT config. I got swamped at work just about the time the site came up so I haven't had much time to work on it. At some point in the near future the domains will switch and that will be Channel Zero, and this site will be gone. Don't hold your breath or anything. Phlome has got his site back up, so make sure you stop by his place as well.

School's Out

Whew classes are over for at least the next few weeks, well okay really just class. I stress out enough trying to keep up with one master-level course at a time, two would drive me insane. Though I will have to at some point if I don't want to be doing this for more than three years. Here's my latest presentation that I did for the Cryptogrpahy class. It was a team project. I did the securing HTTP section. (Notice the complete lack of any fancy graphics in that section.) It's pretty heavy on the cryto-goobletygook so, ya know try and stay awake.

Securing HTTP, SMTP, and FTP.

New domain isn't up yet so no news there.

New Domain

With Ninsi and Phlomes recent troubles with our web hosting service and since school is out for the next few weeks and I have time to mess with it, I decided to change my webhosting service as well. I chose fuitadnet.com, which Demi recomended. In the process I also registed a new domain name, ryanmoore.org It'll just be an alias for channel-zero.net Channel zero is a much cooler name, but it's hard to give out to people over the phone. (Channel-DASH-ZERO-DOT-NET, no spell out zero, did you remember the dash?,etc....) So now I can be ryan.moore@ryanmoore.org. The new domain won't be up for a day or two and then It'll we a week or so before I get all of channel-zero's files moved over. It should appear seamless you guys though. The real question? Use my old MT templates or make new ones? Making MT templates is a pain....

Reading

I just finshed Codelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold which is the first book of the Vorkosigan Saga.
Very good book, but the Sci-Fi bits are really secondary to the story.

Right now I'm reading The Lost Fleet Series by John Hemry/Jack Campbell It's sorta Honor Harrington but not really, though Honor Harrington even goes downhill in the later novels.
